Long, Broad Deep Retractor for Powerful Retraction in Extensive Narrow Approaches
The JANSEN 4x4 RETRACTOR is a medical device of CE Class I according to ISO 13485:2016. This robust variant of the classic Jansen design combines the characteristic length of 10.0 cm with a broader, symmetrical, and sharp 4x4 prong configuration. It is specifically designed for powerful and broad retraction of dense muscle, fascial, and connective tissue in deep, yet relatively confined surgical fields where even more secure hold is required.
Product Highlights:
✔ Certified according to ISO 13485:2016
✔ CE marking Class I (Directive 93/42/EEC)
✔ Robust, long construction for deep approaches
✔ Reinforced sharp 4x4 prongs for maximum hold on broad, dense tissue
✔ Significant length: 10.0 cm for depth penetration and strong leverage
✔ High-quality Stainless Steel 1.4301 – rust-proof and biocompatible
✔ Verified biocompatibility according to ISO 10993
✔ High-strength spring mechanism for extreme tensile load
✔ Sterilizable and reusable (autoclavable)
Advantages of the Jansen 4x4 Retractor:
• Enhanced Holding Power at Depth: The broader 4x4 prong configuration (compared to 3x3) offers a larger contact area and more teeth to dig deep into dense tissue. This enables extremely stable retraction of large muscle groups or fascia in deep wound cavities.
• Optimal Balance of Reach and Stability: With the same depth penetration of 10.0 cm, this variant offers significantly increased mechanical stability and is less prone to bending under high load.
• Ideal for Demanding Spinal Approaches: Particularly valuable in dorsal spinal procedures requiring wide exposure of deep back muscles (erector spinae), such as extensive laminectomies or fusions.
• Efficient Exposure: Can often replace multiple narrower retractors, providing even, broad retraction that significantly improves the visual field at depth.
• Engineered for High Load: The reinforced construction is designed for repeated use under the high forces of orthopedic and trauma surgery.
Technical Specifications:
• Model: JANSEN Retractor, sharp, 4x4
• Type: Long, broad, and powerful spring retractor for deep tissue
• Total Length: 10.0 cm
• Prongs: Symmetrical, sharp; 4 prongs on each side (4x4)
• Material: Stainless Steel 1.4301 (high-gloss polished)
• Mechanism: Industrially reinforced high-performance spring
• Special Feature: Instrument for maximum retraction force in Deep Orthopedics, Traumatology, and Spinal Surgery
• Risk Class: I according to Directive 93/42/EEC
• Reprocessing: Fully autoclavable; cleaning the tight spaces between the broader prong set requires increased attention
Areas of Application:
• Extensive dorsal spinal procedures (e.g., multisegmental fusions, tumor resections)
• Deep orthopedic approaches to the hip and pelvis
• Traumatological reconstructions involving deep soft tissue compartments (e.g., thigh)
• Revision surgery at depth with dense scar tissue
• Major open joint procedures (e.g., total knee arthroplasty) for retraction of the strong capsular-soft tissue sleeve
Important Safety Notes:
• FOR USE BY HIGHLY EXPERIENCED SURGEONS IN DEEP ORTHOPEDIC AND SPINAL SURGERY ONLY.
• CRITICAL INSPECTION: Before each use, a thorough inspection for bending of the long shaft and for intact, sharp tips on all 8 prongs must be performed. The spring and hinges must be checked for micro-cracks.
• EXTREME HAZARD DUE TO HIGH FORCE: This instrument can exert enormous pressure. Imprecise placement or excessive tension can cause severe tissue crushing, muscle avulsion, nerve compression, or vascular injury.
• Not intended for use within the spinal canal or in direct proximity to the dura. Due to its width and power, it is designed for superficial deep muscle layers.
• The leverage is extreme. Lateral bending forces must be strictly avoided as they can lead to permanent deformation or breakage.
• Spring tension must be applied with utmost awareness. Prolonged ischemia of the grasped tissue must be avoided.
• Discard immediately at the slightest sign of material fatigue, deformation, or functional failure.
