General description of surgical instruments

A surgical instrument is a specially designed tool or device for performing specific actions of carrying out desired effects during a surgery or operation, such as modifying biological tissue, or to provide access for viewing it. Over time, many different kinds of surgical instruments and tools have been invented. Some surgical instruments are designed for general use in surgery, while others are designed for a specific procedure or surgery. Accordingly, the nomenclature of surgical instruments follows certain patterns, such as a description of the action it performs (for example, scalpel, hemostat), the name of its inventor(s) (for example, the Kocher forceps), or a compound scientific name related to the kind of surgery (for example, a tracheotome is a tool used to perform a tracheotomy). The expression surgical instrumentation is somewhat interchangeably used with surgical instruments, but its meaning in medical jargon is really the activity of providing assistance to a surgeon with the proper handling of surgical instruments during an operation, by a specialized professional, usually a surgical technologist or sometimes a nurse or radiographer.

Classification

There are several classes of surgical instruments: Graspers, such as forceps Clamps and occluders for blood vessels and other organs Retractors, used to spread open skin, ribs and other tissue Distractors, positioners and stereotactic devices Mechanical cutters (scalpels, lancets, drill bits, rasps, trocars, Ligasure, Harmonic scalpel , rongeurs etc.) Dilators and specula, for access to narrow passages or incisions Suction tips and tubes, for removal of bodily fluids Sealing devices, such as surgical staplers Irrigation and injection needles, tips and tubes, for introducing fluid Powered devices, such as drills, dermatomes Scopes and probes, including fiber optic endoscopes and tactile probes Carriers and appliers for optical, electronic and mechanical devices Ultrasound tissue disruptors, cryotomes and cutting laser guides Measurement devices, such as rulers and calipers An important relative distinction, regarding surgical instruments, is the amount of bodily disruption or tissue trauma that their use might cause the patient. Terms relating to this issue are 'atraumatic' and minimally invasive. Minimally invasive systems are an important recent development in surgery.

Diagnostics - Medical tools for diagnosis

Our diagnostic tools are used to examine the patient. Our diagnostic tools include: reflex hammer, percussion hammer, stethoscope, blood pressure monitor, dynamometer, otoscope, forehead mirror and various other measuring instruments.

Famous doctors of diagnostic instrumentation are and were the doctors ZIEGLER, BABINSKY, RABINER, TAYLOR, TROEMNER, DEJERINE, BITE, JAMESON, TOWNLEY, MOELTGEN, CASTROVIEJO, EPKER, ALY, WEBER, and RIRAP. We owe you the modern instruments of today's diagnostics.

Clamps - surgical clamps

As a rule, clamps serve to temporarily clamp off fine tissue during an operation. The surgical clamps are assigned to different categories: hard-grip clamps, which are not very springy but firm. Soft resilient clamps, which have a jaw made of resilient steel and thus reduce the risk of injury to the tissue to be gripped. Atraumatic clamps, which have a mouth with a special tooth profile that does not traumatize or press the tissue. Whether long-term or short-term clamps, we offer you a large selection of bulldog clamps, artery forceps, scalp clamps, preparation clamps and ligature clamps, tissue grasping forceps, pressure and hemorrhoid clamps, biliary clamps and kidney clamps, hysterectomy clamps and parametrium clamps, and also tonsil clamps, peritoneal clamps, and also towel forceps, tubing clamps and swab tongs and sponge tongs, which guarantee a perfect fixation of surgical drapes.

Famous doctors also shape the image of instrument manufacture here. They gave your instrument its own name and thus highlighted the special features. Doctors BULLDOG, DIEFFENBACH, JOHNS, JOHNS-HOPKINS, CHAPUT, TUFFIER, MARTEL, WILLET-MARTEL, PEAN, KROENLEIN, PENNINGTON, COLLIN, SPENCER-WELLS, HARTMANN, CARREL, TERRIER, MICRO-MOSQUITO, HALSTED-MOSQUITO HALSTED, LERICHE, PROVIDENCE-HOSPITAL, KELLY, KELLY-RANKIN, COLLER, CRILE, CRILE-RANKIN, ROCHESTER-PEAN, ROCHESTER, OCHSNER-KOCHER, PEAN-DELICATE, KOCHER-DELICATE, CAIRNSYDOOLER, OUNSHILLER OVERHOLT, OVERHOLT, BABY-ADSON, ADSON, MEEKER, DIXON-LOVELACE, DANDY, SCHMIDT-SAWTELL, ROCHESTER-CARMALT, BAINBRIDGE, BENGOLEA, CRAFOORD-SELLORS, OVERHOLT-MIXTER, HEISS, RUMELRAFO, SAROT MIXTER, MIXTER-O`SHAUGNESSY, BABY-MIXTER, BRIDGE, LAWRENCE, KANTROWITZ, GEMINI, MINI-GEMINI, TOENNIS, LAHEY, LOWER, FINOCCHIETTO, GUYON, STILLE, HERRICK, GRAY, DESJARDINS, NEGUSERTIMIR BIR HEANEY, HEANEY-BALLANTINE, HEANEY-KANTER, HEANEY-REZAK, LONG, GARLA ND, MOYNIHAN, WERTHEIM-CULLEN, PHANEUF, SEGOND-LANDAU, SEGOND, FAURE, PARAMETRIUM, FERGUSSON, PRATT, ATRAUMATIC, LUER, BABY-MIKULICZ, MIKULICZ, SCHINDLER, SCHAEDEL, JONES, DOYEN, BERNHAARD, BERNHARD CLOTH CLAMP, ROEDER, LORNA, TOHOKU-JAPAN, and PEERS are and were the best in your field.

Seam - needle holder, needles and wire cutters

We offer our special surgical suture instruments such as needle holders in two different versions. The standard version is completely made of medical steel and offers the operating doctor a good tension function of his needle and enables very good needle guidance. Needle holders are exposed to very heavy loads and unfortunately lose their teeth over time. Our needle holders with TC hard metal inserts in the head part take up this fact, whereby the toothing is particularly resistant and offers an excellent fixation of the clamped needle. You can recognize our needle holders with hard metal inlays by the gold-plated handle. Our micro needle holders and micro TC needle holders are used for operations under the microscope and are very fine suturing instruments. You will also find a selection of wire cutters with TC carbide for different wire sizes. Only the best carbide is used here. Overall, the category of suturing instruments also includes hollow guide probes, thread catchers, thread knots and loop twists, reverdin needles, binding needles and various wound clip pliers and tweezers.

We have wire cutters with carbide inserts and thread knotters, thread catchers and loop twists. Our hollow guide probes offer outstanding quality. Microneedle holders can be ordered with or without carbide inserts. We carry reverdin and ligation needles as well as wound clips, wound pliers or wound forceps and wound tweezers.

Forceps - Medical and anatomical forceps

Our tweezers are divided into two classes. Surgical tissue forceps and anatomical dressing forceps. The former is characterized by pointed gripping or holding jaws at the front end, which interlock like teeth when the tweezers are closed. We manufacture the surgical tweezers in various lengths in a straight or angled version. The anatomical tweezers, in turn, are characterized by rounded holding jaws with transverse grooves and are ideal for gripping dressing material or for gently grasping tissue structures. We are particularly proud of our self-developed tick tweezers, with which it is very easy to remove deep-seated ticks including the head. Our entire portfolio of tweezers includes: marking tweezers, atraumatic tweezers, eye tweezers, cilia tweezers, grasping tweezers, fixation tweezers, vascular tissue forceps, capsule tweezers, suture tying tweezers, ENT tweezers, muscle tweezers, splinter tweezers, tumor tweezers, watchmaker tweezers and tooth tweezers.

The anatomical tweezers have precisely made grooves for grasping even the smallest nerves or vessels. Likewise, the articulation paper tweezers, the atraumatic and eye tweezers and the surgical tweezers get particularly sensitive gripping skills along their long medical life. In order to keep it long, our German suppliers, especially for Cilien tweezers, dilators, tweezers and grasping forceps, strive to deliver only the best goods. This can be seen in the fine tweezers for fixing or for removing chips. The ear, nose and throat area also only receives first-class tweezers for hooking, capsules or tying. In addition to muscle and suture tweezers, our tumor and marking forceps are popular bestsellers among doctors. If you value subtleties, watchmaker tweezers and tooth tweezers should be short-listed.

Puncture and cannulas - suction tubes and trocars

Our syringes and suction tubes are used especially for the suction of body fluids. Fast and effective suction is particularly important during an operation. Our suction pipes are offered with the connection options Luer-Lock and quick release. We are particularly proud of our puncture instruments such as biopsy cannulas and trocars, which serve to gain access to a body cavity.

+++ Please also note the appropriate selection of instruments in the new category: Plastic surgery instruments and in particular infiltration-liposuction / liposuction-canulas-and-handles +++

Our guide needles are precisely manufactured and, like the taps and connectors, are subject to strict quality controls.

Famous doctors and doctors gave names for the instruments of the puncture. These include sizes such as NELSON, BUELAU, CAMPBELL, or OCHSNER. Cannulas and accessories were invented and used by the doctors LANDAU, JOHANSSON, EICKEN and LICHTWITZ. Gentlemen DOUGLAS, PIERCE, KRAUSE, COAKLEY and RUSKIN brought several cannulas to series production. The doctors YANKAUER, WALTON, ANDREW-PINCHON and COUPLAND are well known to every medical doctor today. Connectors and taps were invented by BYRD, POOLE, BABY-POOLE, COOLEY, FRAZIER, PLESTER, FERGUSON, EICKEN-KILLIAN, WULLSTEIN, ADSON, COGSWELL and LUER. The liposuction instruments and also the MONOPORT, TRIPORT or MERCEDES cannula are today's standard in medical technology. Other examples include the SHARK and COBRA cannulas as well as SALAH, KLIMA-ROSSEGGER, TUOHY, MENGHINI, QUINKE, ARTERIOGRAPHIE, SCHMID, VERRES and JANET.

Scissors - scissors for surgery

Abbreviations: SP = Spitz, ST = Stumpf, SC = Supercut

We primarily divide our scissors into surgical operating scissors and preparative dissecting scissors. The former are generally straight or curved, blunt-blunt (st-st), pointed-pointed (sp-sp) or blunt-pointed (st-sp) and are used to cut medical aids. Preparing scissors like the Metzenbaum, which is the most commonly used scissors in medical technology, are ideal for tissue preparation. We carry various models in the standard version made entirely of medical steel, or as a supercut with a micro serration. For special sharpness and durability, we also offer our customers our scissors with hard metal inserts. A special combination of hard metal and supercut is our high-end model of a Mayo or Metzenbaum scissors. We also offer a variety of gypsum and bandage scissors, which are ideal for gauze and pulp cutting. Our complete range includes: eye and iris scissors, Enteretomy-Lobectomy-Cartilage scissors, crown scissors, episiotomy umbilical cord scissors, gynecological scissors, iridectomy scissors, ligature scissors, nail scissors and cuticle scissors, tendon and corneal section scissors, tonsil scissors, Bandage scissors and plaster scissors, gum scissors, vascular-neurosurgical scissors, nasal scissors, fine scissors, micro scissors Enteretomy-Lobectomy-Cartilage scissors and Scissors with hard metal (TC).

Scalpel and Knive - scalpel handles and blades

A scalpel or knive is used to cut tissue. We carry surgical scalpels and operating knives with fixed or exchangeable blades. The latter is one of the most widely used scalpels in surgery. The advantage is the reusability of the scalpel handle with the option of inserting a wide variety of scalpel blades depending on the area of application. The area of application for the knives is very different. Amputation knives are used for limb amputation. Autopsy knives, brain knives and transplant knives, on the other hand, are used for autopsies and transplants, as the name suggests. Dermatomes are used in skin transplantation for burns. We also offer blade breakers for the removal and disposal of blades.

Probes - Cotton carriers and button probes

Our probes such as Button probes and hollow probes are used to examine areas of the body that are difficult to access. They are specifically used to probe wound cavities or fistula channels, to assess their depth and direction, or to locate foreign bodies. Cotton swabs, on the other hand, are used to make a smear from an area to be examined. Other instruments in this category: cystic hooks, vascular dilators, vascular strippers and Nabatoff varicose veins.

Swab and sponge tongs - grain tongs

Our swab tongs or sponge tongs are ideal for cleaning or applying ointments or iodine. They are very versatile and sometimes also serve piercers as a tool to fix skin folds and then pierce them. Our Foerster-Ballenger pliers, which are already used in numerous piercing studios, are particularly suitable for this.
Known sponge and swab tongs were invented by doctors Bozemann, Douglas, Bryant, Cheron and COLLIN. They were further developed by the doctors DUPLAY, FLETCHER and very well known and famous, the doctors and professors FOERSTER and BALLENGER.

Plaster scissors and gypsum saws for wound care and fracture treatment

Gypsum scissors are used to cut a bandage made of polycarbonate or light plaster. The serrated scissors are very massive and exert enormous pressure on the material. For a stronger plaster cast, it is recommended to use plaster saws. There are hand saws or electric saws for this. You can also find individual saw blades in this category.

Retractors - abdominal wall holders and retractors

Wound hooks are particularly suitable for pulling tissue apart. Wound hooks are particularly often available in a blunt version that does not damage the adjacent tissue. A very special variant are self-holding retractors. A built-in locking device prevents the spread tissue from contracting again when the two arms are unfolded. Abdominal retractors, however, have been developed to stretch the abdominal wall horizontally or vertically. This creates a large field of operations. Other instruments in this category are abdominal spatulas and fine retractors.
